Mormonism on Film: Stories Told and Stories Untold
Cinematic portrayals of Mormonism go back many decades: From Vincent Price’s role as Joseph Smith in Hollywood’s Brigham Young, to the struggles of Elders Allen and Dalton in God’s Army, to a Catholic teenager stumbling into her first LDS girls camp in Once I Was a Beehive, Mormons have had many of their stories told on the big screen. But what stories remain untold? A panel of scholars and filmmakers, including Derrick Clements (The Daily Herald), Travis Anderson (BYU Philosophy Department), Arthur Van Wagenen (Excel Entertainment), Michael Flynn (The Best Two Years), and Barrett Burgin (The Next Door), will discuss trends in the kinds of Mormon stories cinema has explored already and will look ahead to what kinds of stories Mormon filmmakers working today are most interested in telling.
